Physical Agility/PPE
What does it take to become a firefighter
in Duncanville? Lecture time is devoted to
explaining the current hiring requirements of the
Duncanville Fire Department as well as demonstrations of
the Personal Protection Equipment that firefighters use
while performing their jobs. The class moves outside
to a demonstration of the Physical Agility test where
firefighters compete for best times. Following the
demonstration, students are encouraged to participate in
any portion of the test they feel comfortable with.
Students use the remaining class time being fitted for PPE.

Emergency Medical
Service
EMS plays such a large role in the
Duncanville Fire Department that three class sessions are
devoted to it. The first session introduces the
students to the history of EMS and a chronology of EMS in
the Duncanville Fire Department. In this session,
students will also be given a tour of a front line MICU
and a demonstration of the associated medical equipment.
In the next two sessions the class will be
given instruction in CPR and First Aid. After
completion of these sessions, students will be entitled to
CPR and Basic First Aid certification.

Extrication
Students are given instruction on
hydraulic rescue tools used by the Fire Department, with a
major emphasis on safety. Under close supervision,
students are then allowed to use the tools to remove a
rescue mannequin from a wrecked vehicle.

Fire
Extinguishers/Fire Protection Systems
Types of fire extinguishers and the way
that they are used are discussed, along with a
presentation on sprinkler and alarm systems.
Outside, the class will see a demonstration of a sprinkler
system in action and will be given hands-on instruction in
fire extinguisher use on a live fire.

High Angle Rescue
Want to walk down the side of a
multi-story building? Classroom time for this
session is used to discuss the ropes, knots and equipment
used in the Fire Department for high or low angle rescue.
Students are then given the opportunity to rappel down the
side of a multi story structure.

Incident
Command/Dispatch
Incident Command is the unifying principle
at all emergency operations. Students are given an
overview of the Incident Command structure and how it is
used by fire departments. The class then tours the
Regional Dispatch Center to see how emergency calls are
received and dispatched.

Pump
Operations/Hose Handling
How does a fire hydrant work and how does
the water get to the fire? This session talks about
the history of water supplies in the fire service and the
components needed to get water from underground pipes to
the fire. Students are allowed to operate the pump
on a fire engine, while their class mates handle a hose
line.

Search and Rescue
Ever been lost in the dark? Students
are shown techniques that firefighters use to search a
structure where the visibility is near zero. The
class will then don PPE and enter a simulated smoke filled
building to conduct a search.

Burn
House
This is the last session of the course and
the one that ties many of the previous topics together.
There is no classroom portion of this session.
Instead, students meet at the burn house, where they are
given the opportunity to enter a specially constructed
building to observe and extinguish a live fire.
