Physical Agility/PPE

What does it take to become a firefighter in Duncanville?  Lecture time is devoted to explaining the current hiring requirements of the Duncanville Fire Department as well as demonstrations of the Personal Protection Equipment that firefighters use while performing their jobs.  The class moves outside to a demonstration of the Physical Agility test where firefighters compete for best times.  Following the demonstration, students are encouraged to participate in any portion of the test they feel comfortable with.  Students use the remaining class time being fitted for PPE.

Emergency Medical Service

EMS plays such a large role in the Duncanville Fire Department that three class sessions are devoted to it.  The first session introduces the students to the history of EMS and a chronology of EMS in the Duncanville Fire Department.  In this session, students will also be given a tour of a front line MICU and a demonstration of the associated medical equipment.

In the next two sessions the class will be given instruction in CPR and First Aid.  After completion of these sessions, students will be entitled to CPR and Basic First Aid certification.

Burn House

This is the last session of the course and the one that ties many of the previous topics together.  There is no classroom portion of this session.  Instead, students meet at the burn house, where they are given the opportunity to enter a specially constructed building to observe and extinguish a live fire.
